In honor of National Manufacturing Day, I visited the NextManufacturing Center at Carnegie Mellon earlier this week. I was joined by Jack Beuth, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Co-Director of the Center, and Aaron Aupperlee, reporter at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, to discuss some of the biggest issues affecting manufacturers (and to check out their cool new 3D printers!).

Among the most important and interesting topics we discussed was how manufacturing companies are handling the cultural aspects of change and technological disruption.

I often find that while larger manufacturers may have more dollars and resources to put behind embracing these new technologies, smaller companies are often in a better position to make the technological adoption faster. Much of this can be attributed to the culture that is imbedded in these startups – they have the drive and desire to lead the way in the industry. And, because they are smaller and therefore nimbler, it is less of an undertaking to make these changes.

As a result, manufacturers of all sizes are looking to add employees that have unique skillsets to be able to use these new technologies, which is causing students to look take a closer look at areas like mechanical engineering and material science.
